What is the smallest boat type that could safely cross an ocean?

I'm not talking about a 16' Boston Whaler that could conceivably make it across the Atlantic but a boat that could cross safely and keep it's passengers comfortable. What is the smallest boat type that could safely cross an ocean?
What you need is a "very heavy displacement" sailboat with a full keel. Now... having said that, let me add that this is true regardless of the size vessel. For an ocean going, ocean passage sailboat - heavy displacement can be compared to the difference in the ride and comfort between driving a Volkswagon - compared to riding in Lincoln.

Friends of mine (boating friends) think I don't get sea sick...

but... I do - or at least, I would too - if I were on their boat... but though their boat is the same length as mine... mine is built for the sea... my sailboat displaces 38,000 lbs where as their vessel displaces 18,000 lbs... and the difference is, while they are hanging on for dear life... I'm having a cappichinno and watching to see how many times I see their rudder rise clear out of the water...

So... a "heavy displacement" true ocean passage vessel is rule #1

Next... you mention "passengers" but you don't say how many... Hmmm that leaves that door wide open...

My 60 footer (and you can see pictures of it - inside and out) will (and has) handled the Atlantic all the way to Greece with 3 couples... it was cozy, but quite comfortable and accomodating... another couple on board for that long a cruise would have been one couple too many...

My son has a 30 footer and he and my daughter in law just love it... They just got back from an 11 month cruise that took them from Galveston to Casa Blanca, and then back across to Venezula and up through the Caribbean back to Galveston... and they complain about not enough room or space for that long a voyage... (and that is just 2 people)...

So... maybe that will give you an idea...

Now... I have taken the liberty to discuss only sailboats... I did not mention power boats for three reasons...

1. the cost of fuel

2. the amount of fuel required

3. you asked about the "smallest %26amp; safest"

Their are typically two routes across the Atlantic... the Northern route, or the Southern route...

On the Southern route, you will have 1,800 nm between fuel stops - as you can get fuel in Bermuda and in the Canary Islands.

On the Northern route, the shortest navigable distance between New York City and Southampton and that is 3,169 nautical miles between fuel stops.

Whether sail or power, if you can make 100 nm a day - it will be a good day... and of course, that is forward motion for 24 hours a day... (no rest for the weary... )

So, you need to consider this when you consider the size of your vessel... you will need a minimum of 32 days of food, water, etc. plus some provisions for emergency (my son and I always pack cans of Ensure in our emergency float box - which take up a small amount of space and you can survive on just two cans a day even without water.

So, needless to say... if your talking "small" you are not talking power... fuel weighs 7 lbs a gallon... and you will need at least 1200 gallons of fuel plus (depending on how many people - several hundred gallons of water... And since there are 8 gallons in one cubic foot, you need almost 200 cubic feet just to store fuel and water... That's not small...

I am sorry... I apoligize in advance... but Steve T is one of those people that should just never get out of bed in the mornings... I feel so bad for these people because they miss out on so much in life...

You can see pics (inside and outside) of my sailboat "Enchantment" and my kids 30 footer "Twiga" and possibly find some good additional information for your boat selection... at:

  • I flipped my 13 foot boston whaler the other day?

I was waiting for my brother to get the truck in the water so I thought I would play around a little Well. what happened I was goingg about 24 mph with the tilt and trim set for good speed andmade a decent right hand turn the boat leaned and water got in my starboard side and flipped me like a pancake. The boat didn't sink and I was able to climb on to the bottom of the boat until Another boater came and towed me to shore. we got the boat flipped over and on the trailer, the boat was up side down for about 30 minutes, we got it home the only thing I lost was the wind shield. we hooked the battery up with no gas lines attached and ti cranked over, what would be the next best thing to do for the boat now and no there was'nt any alochol involved.I flipped my 13 foot boston whaler the other day?
    Frank has good answers

and CONGRATULATIONS! In 45 years of foolin' around with boasts this is the first time I've ever heard of someone flipping a Whaler.......I didn't think it could be done, other than trying to beach it in breaking seas !I flipped my 13 foot boston whaler the other day?
Get the engine running asap! Get all new fuel first and add some xtra oil.

Remove the plugs, as there can be water in the cylinder(s ) that can cause hydrolock and ruin the engine, spray some wd40 in the cylinders and crank the engine some revolutions.

Drain water out the carb, re place the plugs and start her up on the muffs!!!I flipped my 13 foot boston whaler the other day?
frank is on the right track but here is a little more info from an expert mechanic

"The longer the engine has been under the worse. The longer it sits after being under the more difficult to get the engine to run again. Salt water is worse than fresh water. If the engine was running when it went under it could have sucked water and damaged the engine internally.

To fix, bring engine to a warm, dry place. Lift bonnit and spray down everthing with freshwater. Pull the sparkplug hole and spray with WD-40. Drain oil. If oil was full of salt water then rince with fresh water water and then fill with oil. Change filters. Pull carb, fuel filter, fuel line and check for water intrusion. Rebuild carb if any water has gotten into it.

Put it all back together, and try to start. If you get the engine running let her run for about five miutes, then change the oil and filter and all filters. Run again and check for water in the oil. If no water in the oil run the engine for about two hours and change the oil one more time.

Generally as a rule if the engine was underwater for less than a day or two it will come back to life.

Couple more hints-If the enigne was under salt water for a few days sometimes people will submerge the complete engine in a barril of fresh water for about six hours to dilute the salt.

    Thanks XXX XXXXXX

    Need specs on boston whaler,squall?

Will this boat pull a wakeboarder up and keep them up? also what are some tubing tips.?

ok now i have a boston whaler rage.

it is 15 foot with 175 hp jet engine.

now i love this boat and on a calm day it will do 60 but does a jet engine have the power to quickly pull a wakeboarder up and keep them up?

also what are some tips for pulling wakeboarders/skiers and tubes.

i am new to both wakeboarding and pulling wakeboards/tubes.

i have ridden on tubes before but have never wakeboarded.(plan to this summer)

thanksWill this boat pull a wakeboarder up and keep them up? also what are some tubing tips.?
    I am sorry.........really?

This boat should yank their arms out of their sockets. But many wakeboarders aren't looking for that. Most boarders are looking for wakes, fat ones. I know many skiers who don't like jet wakes, don't know how this translates to boarders.

    Be thinking Fat Sacs.

The best way to learn how to drive a boat is get pulled behind one. I am an experienced waterskier (35 years) and barefooter (25 years) and that makes me the most requested driver on my lake. You gotta know what your skier/boarder wants.

In terms of tubers: whip 'em. Learn how to drive to keep them outside the wakes, and how to get them back in and across the wakes. They have no control so you have to be the guy who moves them.

Have fun. Practice, practice, practice. Will this boat pull a wakeboarder up and keep them up? also what are some tubing tips.?
Heck you can pull a tube or a wake board with a jet ski. What you have is more than enough. Will this boat pull a wakeboarder up and keep them up? also what are some tubing tips.?
You have more that enough power.
