I'm not talking about a 16' Boston Whaler that could conceivably make it across the Atlantic but a boat that could cross safely and keep it's passengers comfortable. What is the smallest boat type that could safely cross an ocean?
What you need is a "very heavy displacement" sailboat with a full keel. Now... having said that, let me add that this is true regardless of the size vessel. For an ocean going, ocean passage sailboat - heavy displacement can be compared to the difference in the ride and comfort between driving a Volkswagon - compared to riding in Lincoln.
Friends of mine (boating friends) think I don't get sea sick...
but... I do - or at least, I would too - if I were on their boat... but though their boat is the same length as mine... mine is built for the sea... my sailboat displaces 38,000 lbs where as their vessel displaces 18,000 lbs... and the difference is, while they are hanging on for dear life... I'm having a cappichinno and watching to see how many times I see their rudder rise clear out of the water...
So... a "heavy displacement" true ocean passage vessel is rule #1
Next... you mention "passengers" but you don't say how many... Hmmm that leaves that door wide open...
My 60 footer (and you can see pictures of it - inside and out) will (and has) handled the Atlantic all the way to Greece with 3 couples... it was cozy, but quite comfortable and accomodating... another couple on board for that long a cruise would have been one couple too many...
My son has a 30 footer and he and my daughter in law just love it... They just got back from an 11 month cruise that took them from Galveston to Casa Blanca, and then back across to Venezula and up through the Caribbean back to Galveston... and they complain about not enough room or space for that long a voyage... (and that is just 2 people)...
So... maybe that will give you an idea...
Now... I have taken the liberty to discuss only sailboats... I did not mention power boats for three reasons...
1. the cost of fuel
2. the amount of fuel required
3. you asked about the "smallest %26amp; safest"
Their are typically two routes across the Atlantic... the Northern route, or the Southern route...
On the Southern route, you will have 1,800 nm between fuel stops - as you can get fuel in Bermuda and in the Canary Islands.
On the Northern route, the shortest navigable distance between New York City and Southampton and that is 3,169 nautical miles between fuel stops.
Whether sail or power, if you can make 100 nm a day - it will be a good day... and of course, that is forward motion for 24 hours a day... (no rest for the weary... )
So, you need to consider this when you consider the size of your vessel... you will need a minimum of 32 days of food, water, etc. plus some provisions for emergency (my son and I always pack cans of Ensure in our emergency float box - which take up a small amount of space and you can survive on just two cans a day even without water.
So, needless to say... if your talking "small" you are not talking power... fuel weighs 7 lbs a gallon... and you will need at least 1200 gallons of fuel plus (depending on how many people - several hundred gallons of water... And since there are 8 gallons in one cubic foot, you need almost 200 cubic feet just to store fuel and water... That's not small...
I am sorry... I apoligize in advance... but Steve T is one of those people that should just never get out of bed in the mornings... I feel so bad for these people because they miss out on so much in life...
You can see pics (inside and outside) of my sailboat "Enchantment" and my kids 30 footer "Twiga" and possibly find some good additional information for your boat selection... at:

I flipped my 13 foot boston whaler the other day?
I was waiting for my brother to get the truck in the water so I thought I would play around a little Well. what happened I was goingg about 24 mph with the tilt and trim set for good speed andmade a decent right hand turn the boat leaned and water got in my starboard side and flipped me like a pancake. The boat didn't sink and I was able to climb on to the bottom of the boat until Another boater came and towed me to shore. we got the boat flipped over and on the trailer, the boat was up side down for about 30 minutes, we got it home the only thing I lost was the wind shield. we hooked the battery up with no gas lines attached and ti cranked over, what would be the next best thing to do for the boat now and no there was'nt any alochol involved.I flipped my 13 foot boston whaler the other day?

and CONGRATULATIONS! In 45 years of foolin' around with boasts this is the first time I've ever heard of someone flipping a Whaler.......I didn't think it could be done, other than trying to beach it in breaking seas !I flipped my 13 foot boston whaler the other day?
Get the engine running asap! Get all new fuel first and add some xtra oil.
Remove the plugs, as there can be water in the cylinder(s ) that can cause hydrolock and ruin the engine, spray some wd40 in the cylinders and crank the engine some revolutions.
Drain water out the carb, re place the plugs and start her up on the muffs!!!I flipped my 13 foot boston whaler the other day?
frank is on the right track but here is a little more info from an expert mechanic
"The longer the engine has been under the worse. The longer it sits after being under the more difficult to get the engine to run again. Salt water is worse than fresh water. If the engine was running when it went under it could have sucked water and damaged the engine internally.
To fix, bring engine to a warm, dry place. Lift bonnit and spray down everthing with freshwater. Pull the sparkplug hole and spray with WD-40. Drain oil. If oil was full of salt water then rince with fresh water water and then fill with oil. Change filters. Pull carb, fuel filter, fuel line and check for water intrusion. Rebuild carb if any water has gotten into it.
Put it all back together, and try to start. If you get the engine running let her run for about five miutes, then change the oil and filter and all filters. Run again and check for water in the oil. If no water in the oil run the engine for about two hours and change the oil one more time.
Generally as a rule if the engine was underwater for less than a day or two it will come back to life.
Couple more hints-If the enigne was under salt water for a few days sometimes people will submerge the complete engine in a barril of fresh water for about six hours to dilute the salt.
Thanks XXX XXXXXX

Will this boat pull a wakeboarder up and keep them up? also what are some tubing tips.?
ok now i have a boston whaler rage.
it is 15 foot with 175 hp jet engine.
now i love this boat and on a calm day it will do 60 but does a jet engine have the power to quickly pull a wakeboarder up and keep them up?
also what are some tips for pulling wakeboarders/skiers and tubes.
i am new to both wakeboarding and pulling wakeboards/tubes.
i have ridden on tubes before but have never wakeboarded.(plan to this summer)
thanksWill this boat pull a wakeboarder up and keep them up? also what are some tubing tips.?
I am sorry.........really?
This boat should yank their arms out of their sockets. But many wakeboarders aren't looking for that. Most boarders are looking for wakes, fat ones. I know many skiers who don't like jet wakes, don't know how this translates to boarders.
Be thinking Fat Sacs.
The best way to learn how to drive a boat is get pulled behind one. I am an experienced waterskier (35 years) and barefooter (25 years) and that makes me the most requested driver on my lake. You gotta know what your skier/boarder wants.
In terms of tubers: whip 'em. Learn how to drive to keep them outside the wakes, and how to get them back in and across the wakes. They have no control so you have to be the guy who moves them.
Have fun. Practice, practice, practice. Will this boat pull a wakeboarder up and keep them up? also what are some tubing tips.?

Please reccomend a small boat that I can tow with a 4 cylinder.Under 100 pounds total with trailer?
I have a 2003 Saturn LW 4cylinder. Manual says I can tow up to 1000 pounds. I am looking for a boat that is on the low side of that, seats 3 (4 is better, even if snug) , I would like to be able get out in the intercostal, hugging the shore. I have thought of a small Boston whaler, (I saw a PT cruiser towing one) or one of the knock offs. I Was considering a Gheeno because of the weight, But I am afraid the even the mildest chop coulde swam it. Any reccomendations? Please reccomend a small boat that I can tow with a 4 cylinder.Under 100 pounds total with trailer?
I have a small, light bass boat( 3 people ), w/ 35 hp motor, and trailer, when loaded with all fishing gear, coolers, etc, 1350 lbs. I tow it with a 2000 Dodge Caravan ( 2.4 L ); No problems ! ( There are no mountains where I live) !Please reccomend a small boat that I can tow with a 4 cylinder.Under 100 pounds total with trailer?
take a look at deep 14' - 16' aluminum fishing boats (with 20" transoms) aluminum boats are very light and if you look ones that are deep V they are fairly sea worthy.
if you haven't done so already, suggest that you take the small boat safety course, you will gain knowledge of boating safety, navigation, boat types, which will help you to pick out the size and type of boat you need.
boating in a small boat requires a sense of safety, but aluminum boats can work well if you keep an eye on the weather and sea conditions.
hope this helps

Joke; The Ultimate Salesman ... :)?
A young guy from Nebraska moves to Florida and goes to a big "everything under one roof" department store looking for a job. The Manager says, "Do you have any sales experience?" The kid says, "Yeah. I was a salesman back in Omaha."
The boss liked the kid and gave him the job. "You start tomorrow." I'll come down after we close and see how you did."
His first day on the job was rough, but he got through it. After the store was locked up, the boss came down. "How many customers bought something from you today? The kid says, "One".
The boss says, "Just one? Our sales people average 20 to 30 customers a day. How much was the sale for?"
The kid says, "$101,237.65 ".
The boss says, "$101,237.65? What the heck did you sell?"
The kid says, "First, I sold him a small fish hook. Then I sold him a medium fishhook. Then I sold him a larger fishhook. Then I sold him a new fishing rod. Then I asked him where he was going fishing and he said down the coast, so I told him he was going to need a boat, so we went down to the boat department and I sold him a twin engine Boston Whaler. Then he said he didn't think his Honda Civic would pull it, so I took him down to the automotive department and sold him that 4x4 Expedition."
The boss said, "A guy came in here to buy a fish hook and you sold him a BOAT and a TRUCK?"
The kid said, "No, the guy came in here to buy Tampons for his wife, and I said, 'Dude, your weekend's shot, you should go fishing.'"Joke; The Ultimate Salesman ... :)?

Is it necessary to take the RI boating course in order to get my boater's license?
I'm 14 and would like to get my boating license. My brother (19) and his friend/boss (43) just got a 27 year old Boston Whaler. It is 18 feet long and has a 150 horse power engine. My brother's friend grew up around both sail boats and motor boats. He has had multiple boats before and is willing to help me learn. They are both confident I can learn how to handle the boat by studying on a website. I sail 420's over the summer and know a lot about the water. I know there's a lot to learn but I'm sure I can learn most from the website. What I can't learn from the website I can learn from actually driving the boat. I have heard from some people that have a boater's license that I have to take a course to get my license but others have told me I only have to take a test to earn it. I would like to know whether or not I have to take the course or can I just study and take the test. THANKS!!!Is it necessary to take the RI boating course in order to get my boater's license?
while it is probably much easier to go through the boat ed boaters safety course first, RI does offer a Challenge exam where you can take the boaters safety test without taking a course.
for more info on the proctored Challenge exam go to the web site below
http://www.dem.ri.gov/programs/bnatres/e…
from the web site
"There is no registration and no fee for this exam. There is also no age limit, but be advised that this test deals with material that may be complex for younger children. We highly recommend taking the full boating safety course to insure you and your family understand the material required to operate and navigate vessels on the water safely. If you have chosen the challenge exam as the method of certification, you will need to study information presented in “Boat Rhode Island, A Course on Responsible Boating” and “The Handbook of Rhode Island Laws and Responsibilities”. Both publications are available either on the web through the online course or by contacting DEM/Environmental Police at (401) 222-3070 for the home study packet."

All you have to do is follow the instructions at boat-ed and take the online course. Pass the test... and that's it. It really is that easy.
The course is going to teach is "boat %26amp; boater safety". It can't teach you boat "handling"... That, comes from hands on experience.
Good Luck,
John

What type of fiberglass do you use for a jon boat?
ok... we have about a 14?ft jon boat that needs the whole outside refiberglassed now when I started looking online to buy some and noticed theres all diffrent ounce sizes and weaved diffrently and not to mention a hundred diffrent types of resin I want some thing that will hold up but not might as well buy a 22 foot boston whaler after all the money we put in to it!
so what once or what site should I go to or just the excact name or the fiberglass and resin to buy for that project and thanks in advance! What type of fiberglass do you use for a jon boat?
YOU ACN FIBERGLASS SHEETING 4FT, BY 20,30 FEET ROLL. YOU CAN GET THIS LARGE QUANITY AT A STORE THAT SELLS AIRCRAFT SUPPLYS. IF YOU LIVE NEAR AROUND A PRIVATE AIRPORT, GO TO THE HANGER, AND TALK TO THE PARTS MGR. AND HE WILLSELL YOU SOME.What type of fiberglass do you use for a jon boat?
if the boat needs to be refiberglassed you might as well get rid of it. Maybe what you need is an epoxy sealer or something to rehab the gel coat. Thats what really keeps the water out. Have you talked to anyone at a boat supply store??

What do you name a LIME GREEN boat?
I just got a new boat- It has a bright LIME GREEN body thats so vivid you can see it from way far away! And it also has a PURPLE canvas top. It's 18 ft. long, and its a BOSTON WHALER. I need to have it named so I can make some decals soon!!!! WHAT WOULD YOU NAME IT?What do you name a LIME GREEN boat?
Seriously, I would call it "The Lime Green Boat"....if it's as vivid a color as you say, anyone that sees it will simple call her "The Lime Green Boat" anyway...not "Summer Wind", "Southern Cross", or "Ex-ta-SEA" or some other overused boat name.
Call her what she is begging to be called!!!

Top Salesman for the Month......?
A young guy from Mississippi moves to Florida and goes to a big
"everything under one roof" department store looking for a job. The Manager says, "Do
you have any sales experience?" The kid says "Yeah. I was a salesman back in
Mississippi" Well, the boss liked the kid and gave him the job. "You start tomorrow. I'll come down after we close and see how you did."
His first day on the job was rough, but he got through it. After the
store was locked up, the boss came down. "How many customers bought something from you today?
The kid says "One."
The boss says "Just one? Our sales people average 20 to 30 customers a day.
How much was the sale for?"
The kid says "$121,237.65."
The boss says "$121,237.65? What the heck did you sell?"
The kid says,"First, I sold him a small fish hook. Then I sold him a
medium fish hook, Then I sold him a larger fish hook. Then I sold him a new fishing rod. Then I asked him where he was going fishing and he said down the coast,
so I told him he was going to need a boat. So we went down to the boat department, and I sold him a twin engine Boston Whaler. Then he said he didn't think his Honda Civic would pull it, so I took him down to the automotive department and sold him that 4 x 4 Expedition."
The boss said, "A guy came in here to buy a fish hook and you sold him a BOAT and a TRUCK?"
The kid said, "No, the guy came in here to buy Tampons for his wife, and I said, "Dude, your weekend's shot, you should go fishing."Top Salesman for the Month......?
Yeah but what happens when he gets home without the tampons? Oh yeah - he ain't going home!

Proline vs Grady white?
Looking at two boats: a 2006 23' walk-around with cuddy cabin proline with a suzuki 200 hp four stroke with warranty till 11'. Got all the bells and whistles imaginable. Even a head (porta potti) for the ladies. It costs about 26k out the door. The next choice is a 2008 grady white 180 sportsman (18' center console) with a 150 hp yamaha four stroke that also has many nice features along with warranty till 11' no head though. Out the door, this one is 30.5k. Will be selling a roughly 17' palm beach center console boat. Plan on keeping the boat for a 5-10+ yrs to one day get a Boston Whaler. I understand GW are better, but it won't be the last because in about 5-10 years, I may be interested in a boston whaler, that is one reason I am leaning toward the proline. The boat will be used by a family of four that likes to fish and entertain friends and family. Any suggestions between these two would be welcomed, Thanks in advance!!!

Simple, if you want to take the family out, get the boat with the head in it. Using a bucket for the ladies does not last! Both boats are good, as are the engines. You get more for your money, better equipped, and in 5 years you will be looking at something else.Proline vs Grady white?
Tough call. Grady White is the better boat, but Suzuki is the better motor. If you plan on over-nighting, the Proline , but the GW will be a more fun ride, and better to fish out of. I would probably take the GW, but it would be nice if it had a Suzuki or Merc Verado hanging on it.Proline vs Grady white?
2 completely different boats 4+ people in a 18 ' boats is cramped. Proline is not the best buy. Grady white never impressed me.If your want a fishing boat or a cabin boat Heads can be on center console but tight fit.Keep looking around as there are great buys try and cover all your needs and then work on the price with them.Boston Whaler will beat you to death as they are hard riding. Low sides. Unless it's in the 25' and above.
Grady is a better know and today built boat. But you are looking for a boat for the WIFE and kids. The Walk-around cuddy with a porta-potti will make staying out on the water more fun for them. So for the family and all around fun on the water go with the ProLine. Not a bad price.
I have a 23' Pro-Line and I love it. It replaced a 17 Center console Pro-Line. This boat has fished the Chesapeake Bay and off shore out of Indian River DE and Ocean City MD.
I have friends that have Grady's and I have worked on them. If you where going to be getting the boat for you and a friend to fish out of the 18' Grady CC would be great.
Good Luck - Boat Safe!

I didn't winterize my boat!!!!!!!!?
I have a 15ft boston whaler with a 75hp Mercury outboard on it.
all I did to it for the winter was pull the drain plug for the boat in the bilge and empty the fuel tank and i also pulled out the
battery I live in jersey and it can get pretty cold, I'm pretty sure
that can effect the motor.
What can i expect to deal with when i try to start it in the spring?I didn't winterize my boat!!!!!!!!?
Just make sure the engine is in the full down position so that it has drained out and no water is standing in the exhuast /prop hub area. When you are ready to use it lube up the fittings, and test run it using the flush out attachment and make sure its all good. Next year winterize it by running the engine on land with the flush out, fog it till it quits, let the water drain out while you lube it up (grease fittings on steering and engine pivot) and spray it down with silicone spray. Top off fuel tank and add Sta-Bil. Change lower unit oil and water pump, install new zincs. Remove battery and store for winter by covering and keep boat bow up. If you stored it like that I bet you have no damage at all.
Wow, lots of interesting/wrong answers here.
You are not going to crack your block. If you will crack anything, it will be your gearcase, but thats only if you have a large amount of water in there, which you likely don't.
I really wouldn't worry too much about it, but don't make a habit of skipping winterization. The whole idea of winterization is to protect your engine through the cold weather, and to assure it fires up for you in the spring time.
One important thing to take care of over the winter is your fuel. This new fuel with ethanol in it does not last very long unless you stabilize it, and it is prone to attracting water.
When spring rolls around, give your engine a basic tune up (change gear oil, grease the fittings, and steering cable,) and run it up on fresh fuel for a little bit.
If you haven't done a water pump in 2 years or more, I'd do that too, along with the thermostat and poppet valve. You'll be ok.I didn't winterize my boat!!!!!!!!?
Dont worry so much!
It all depends on when you last used the boat. Winterization of outboards is more about "storage" than keeping the engine from freezing. When the engine in in the full down position, it only takes a few minutes to drain 90% of the water out of the engine. There are a few areas that trap small amounts. The real concern is the cold temps cause condensation which can cause problems on the crankshaft bearings, and wiring. If you kept the engine in a dry environment, that's better than covered with a tarp. But, first, I'd spray everything with WD-40, which is intended to drive out moisture. Then start the engine as soon as possible (now)and let it run up to temperature for half an hour or so. Then spray some "fogging oil' in to the engine....carb....... keep it in the full down position and let drain. Then take whats left of the fogging oil and spray everything. You should make sure that snow or water hasn't cracked the gear case where the exhaust comes out thru the prop. Cover it next winter. Lube the steering and engine mounts. Get it started early this spring and use it as soon as the weather clears and warms u some. More engines fail due to lack of use than ware out. Bottom line, don't worry too much. Edit: Boating in No.VA, has a good question, If water/snow was piled up or filling the lowerunit thru-hub exhaust it can crack from just behind the prop down about 3 to 4 inches. Not always visible, but it stops when it reaches the back of the bearing carrier. It can be welded but if you do, you can't take the carrier out again, which means if you have bearing or gear failure later, your looking at a new expensive housing, more than the motor's worth in most cases. I've never seen any....I repeat any ... powerheads that had a cracked block from freezing. It's always at the bottom. The crack can expand over time and threaten the gearcase integrety, but the oil would be gunmetal gray or green now. If the seals had already been leaking, the oil would be white, but would seldom freeze.....I've never seen one. If there was that much water in it, the gearcase is toast anyway. Thanks for the input..........EDIT......... It's good news that the motor was down, it makes it much more likely no lower unit damage. But go back to the early advise, to start the engine and fog it, and spray everything, i know it's a lot of trouble but a few weeks or a couple moths can make a difference.. Good Luck!
You might have cracked the block or the bottom end of the motor. You should definitely take your motor into a marine repair shop to have them inspect the motor for damage before you operate it. There could be a simple inexpensive repair needed that will otherwise result in serious damage.
There are other things that you should do with your boat besides removing the drain plug. Covering the boat will protect it from snow and dirt and make your investment last longer. Doing some of these things now could be better than doing nothing. Better late than never, as the saying goes.
See the source link below for a quick guide for winter lay up for next fall.I didn't winterize my boat!!!!!!!!?
if there was no sand in the cooling system you should be ok. outboards are self draining. you should have put fuel stabilizer in the last time you had it out. worst case scenario, you will have gummed up fuel in the system. i would take it to a qualified dealer in the spring to get summerized. for now i would pull the spark plugs and spray some fogging oil in the cylinders and turn the flywheel bt hand 10 or so times, and do this a couple of times.
i know alot of people that dont winterize there outboards. because the outboard is in the down position most of the water did drain out. draining the gas is good all though alot of people like to run fuel stabilizer so it gets all the way to the carbs. keeps them from gumming up. also keeping the tank full will keep air from destroying the octane in the fuel that is left in there. your probably fine. might have a little trouble starting it when spring comes, if so rebuild the carbs.
Just fog the inside of hte motor, which is really the only thing that you didn't already do anyway. It will probably be fine even if you do nothing though.
Question for Richard as I know nothing about o/b's but...
Can he tell if he has done any harm to the engine by checking the oil and seeing if it's milky white or any other shade than what oil should look like?
you should have emptied the lower unit, they can
get water in
Get the engine straight up and down, that is the biggie. Outboard engines will drain themselves if you trim them all the way down. If it is not, get it warm, and then trim it down.
You are gonna want to drain the lower unit as quick as you can. If there is any water in that gear lube it can be trouble. She is going to come out like molasses so just leave the pan under it for awhile and don't refill until the temp. comes up.
Can you drain the carb? Do that if you can to keep from get varish in there. On the first tank of the spring run premium gas and an additive called SeaFoam, as a matter of fact run this for the first couple tankfuls to clean it out.
When you first use the engine in the spring watch the engine temp. If it begins to climb or the tell tale is not spitting shut her down and replace the impeller. Water freezes in the lower unit and plays havoc with those rubber blades. Make sure when you change the impeller to get all the little pieces out of there.
Other than that you should be good to go.
Well, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but there's a good chance you may discover a busted block and bottom end come spring! Not winterizing your boat and motor is a HUGE NO NO! I hope your a very lucky guy and everything's O.K. because if not, your outboard may now be best used as an anchor! I'd look at it now because there's still a lot of cold weather left. If it managed this far undamaged, try to go ahead and winterize the motor anyway! You could be talking BIG $$$$$!!! Hope your luck's better than mine!

Have you ever gone to see your team play on the road and been harassed by the home fans?
The worst for me is one time in Hartford about 12 years ago I almost went at it with a couple of drunk Whalers fans. I was in Sabres gear. Of course if I remember myself back then, I was probably just as guilty.
I go to Sabres games now at MSG, Long Island and Boston and never have any problems.
What problems have you had?
|||Never really harassed, there is good natured ribbing back and forth but never anything I would call harassment.
I am also polite, if I go to a Habs game in Ottawa, Boston or Quebec in the old days, I will cheer for my team but I won't sit there and say Bruins suck.
Obviously I attend more home games and really enjoy talking to the out of town fans. First of all, if they traveled from Philly here for the game chances are they are a real hockey fan and you can have a better hockey discussion with them than they local fan on the other side of you that knows the habs and not much else.
By the same token when I am in another teams barn, the fans I am talking to quickly realize I am a fan of the game, I know the players on their team and I can discuss the positives and negatives of their team at a slightly higher level than Bruins Suck.
I was at a preseason game in Ottawa last year for the Habs and the guy behind me is giving me the gears all game as the sens are up, when the habs tied it at 4 I was a little exuberant in my celebration and stayed standing a bit too long. He is grumbling about sitting down so I turn to him and say, oh you can't see the replay- That was a great goal wasn't it. The rest of the sens fans around us were laughing too. The key is to be funny, witty and polite and not act like a neanderthal|||I'm a Rangers fan living in Philly. I've gone to every game the Rangers have played here and for the most part, the Philly fans stick to yelling "You suck" "Go back to New York" and "Go back to Sweden" (I was wearing a Jagr Jersey so I am a little confused because he's Czech) Occasionally, they are down right nasty and throw food and push. I've also gone to games in Toronto (Leafs fans are amazing people. they didn't heckle us, just booed the team.), Washington (Again, great fans, a little trash talking but all in good fun) and the Devils (whose fans are the worst. I was shoved by a woman in Parise jersey while waiting in line for the bathroom) All teams have good and bad fans and I think it has a lot to do with drinking. I also think if I was a guy it might be worse. |||I'm a Bruins fan, and I used to go to Boston Buffalo at the old Aud. My dad would take me, when I was barely 8. I'm 23 now, and I still remember those douche-bag Sabre's fans harassing me,a little kid.
To this day I despise everything Sabre's
On a positive note, one of my best memories is of my dad kicking the **** out of some asshole who was harassing his 8 year old kid. Good times. I can only hope to be as good of a dad to my boy|||I have never personally been harassed at a game by another team's fans, but once when I was at a Flyers game (I am a Devils fan) I saw another man wearing a Devils Jersey about a section over and there was some drunk Philly fans and they started to punch that guy and when he tried to defend himself quite a few more Flyers fans actually jumped in and got him on the floor. I couldn't really see what was happening but the security did come rushing over and even though some of the Flyer fans weren't letting them in eventually two big security guards came over and got them off of him. Pretty sure they were thrown out, but the Devils guy's face looked horrible and he was bleeding a bit. |||I have a tendency to wear a opposing teams jerseys or other gear to a roadtrip game. Columbus in Chicago, Buffalo in Columbus, etc. Being a smallish female it's only evoked a bit of light-hearted smack talk and smiles from the home team's fans except for one incident that didn't amount to much.
I was wearing my beloved Roenick Flyers' jersey in Tampa when this drunk guy who was trying to impress his date spent two solid periods harassing me (yeah, Mr Big picking on a petite female, lol). |||agreed.. i think we all know that there won't be as much hospitality towards a fan for the opposing team, as much as there would be if you were a fan of the home team...
but i had a question up on here about 2 weeks ago asking who couldn't stand the flyers fan, because i think that BY FAR they are the worst fans to be in a stadium with...whether its a home game or away game. they are just totally and completely rude...and it "was in violation of Yahoo Answers" which pissed me off, because i don't see how.. but yea FLYERS FANS SUCK!!!! coming from a DEVILS%26lt;3 fan.. and you should have seen how many people agreed with me on that.
idk if you heard about the flyers game against the devils, where it was at the flyers stadium and one of the flyers fans through a flare, lit up and everything onto the ice when the ref announced they didn't get a goal...and all the flyers fans were blaming a poor lone devils fan who was just there to watch the game|||A couple years ago at a Sharks game I wore Habs gear (toque, tshirt, jersey, sweats) and a drunken SJ fan not only spilled a beer on my jersey (one I've had since grade 10 I am in my 30s now) but then he said "Fu*k you Chicago" while hurling (not a baseball or playing the Irish sport)
Side note: the tickets were $95 each (third row up by the glass) and the Sharks put a serious hurting on Theodore, it was like 6-1 :( If that wasn't enough we missed the train (had left the car at my place) so my gf at the time (who was a Sharks fan) and I had to take a taxi home which was another $150 or so.|||the only away game i've attended was the steelers at chargers back in 2006. luckily there were a TON of steelers fans there and we weren't harassed too much, but walking back to the car, some drunken charger idiot fan wouldn't stop yelling at me and my husband. he kept saying 'go home a$$holes, you guys suck, you're f*cking p*ssies'. i only didn't verbally spar with him because 1) he was drunk and you can't win a fight with a drunk since they know it all, and 2) we were in a stadium parking lot 3,000 miles from home. i did manage to stump him on 'how many rings does your team have?' (0 to the steelers 5) and all he could manage back was 'we just won our superbowl'. mind you this was like the 5th game of the season. idiot. i was pissed off but ya know, that's just the kind of sh*t you can expect going into an opponents stadium. |||I went to a Sabres game in Philly and this guy kept turning around and LOOKING at me every time the Flyers scored a goal.
Are you a good sales person?
A young guy from Mississippi moves to Florida and goes to a big "everything under one roof" department store looking for a job. The Manager says, "Do you have any sales experience?"
The kid says "Yeah, I was a salesman back in Mississippi "
Well, the boss liked the kid and gave him the job. "You start tomorrow. I'll come down after we close and see how you did."
His first day on the job was rough, but he got through it. After the store was locked up, the boss came down. "How many customers bought something from you today?
The kid says "One."
The boss says "Just one? Our sales people average 20 to 30 customers a day. How much was the sale for?"
The kid says "$121,237.65."
The boss says "$121,237.65? What the hell did you sell?"
The kid says, "First, I sold him a small fish hook. Then I sold him a medium fish hook. Then I sold him a larger fish hook. Then I sold him a new fishing rod. Then I asked him where he was going fishing, and he said down the coast, so I told him he was going to need a boat. So we went down to the boat department, and I sold him a twin engine Boston Whaler. Then he said he didn't think his Honda Civic would pull it, so I took him down to the auto department and sold him that 4 x 4 Expedition."
The boss said, "A guy came here to buy a fish hook, and you sold him a BOAT and a TRUCK?"
The kid said, "No, the guy came in here to buy Tampons for his wife. I told him "Dude, your weekend's shot, you should go fishing."Are you a good sales person?

Towing a boat with a Prius? Are you starting a comedy routine?Towing a Boat With a 05 Prius???
You should be "able" to do it, but personally I wouldn't try. Prius is meant for economy travel hence the hybrid setup not towing or launching a boat.
Yikes.
Towing with a Prius..... you're kidding!
A Harley has more torque.
Here's a site that answers this question: http://www.cleangreencar.co.nz/page/faq-鈥?/a>
Find the question that talks about towing.
Goes to show ya.... Ya can't have your granola and eat it too!Towing a Boat With a 05 Prius???
So all the gas you save with your Prius goes into the boat, and then some, ey.
The Toyota Prius is not designed for towing a load. The owner's manual does not recommend using the vehicle for towing. (Doing so may invalidate your warranty.)
That's not to say that some owners do not do this, for light loads and/or for short trips. You just have to take it carefully, and monitor fluid temps.
What's the tongue weight, and what is the weight of the trailer/boat combination that you'll be towing?
As for traction, that'll partially depend on what tires you have on your Prius...
You might be better off looking for a rental vehicle that can tow, or buying a buddy a beer/dinner to do the tow for you.
Hi,
short answer, no, you cannot tow with your Prius.
And your Prius has 290 foot pounds of torque, more than most mid-sized sedans, so it's not a question of the Prius being able to get the boat moving (torque starts to move a vehicle, horsepower keeps it moving).
BTW (I can't help myself), a H-D will have in the neighborhood of 80-110 ft-lb of torque for a stock engine (2005 FLHTCSE2, 1.75" Straight Pipes, S%26amp;S 510G Cams, SE AC, 2005 FLHTCSE2, SE103, SE AC, Rinehart True Duals, USB PC) according to official H-D websites I just looked through. Maybe a bit more, but its not 290 stock. Your stock Prius will out-torque a stock Harley, sorry guys.
Anyway, sorry PW, back to reality...
A vehicle can tow based on it's transmission and the way the power is transferred through the transmission to the drive wheels.
A vehicle with a CVT (continuously variable transmission) like your Prius is not able to tow, basically, because the transmission is not built to lock into a specific gear made for high torque applications like towing. The CVT is always shifting and adapting to the driving conditions to maximize mileage.
Yes, there are hybrids with CVT's that can tow, like the Highlander Hybrid that can tow 3500 lbs. However, that CVT is geared and controlled differently than the higher efficiency CVT in the Prius.
There is more to it than that, but that's essentially it.
There are people who put class one (1000 lb.) hitches on a Prius or other vehicles with CVT's, but those hitches are for bike racks that slip into the hitch receiver and basically hang off the back of the vehicle without touching the upper sections.
One last note, all modern vehicles, including the Prius, have "black boxes" that record issues with the vehicle that fall outside factory specs. For example, if you put E85 (85% ethanol, 15% gas) into the gas tank of a Toyota or Honda, it will cause the engine to misfire and that continuous misfire will show up as a code in the gas engine control modules. The next time you went into the dealership for service and the tech hooks up the diagnostic link to check your vehicle, a code would come up telling them that the engine had been misfiring for a long period of time (the tank of E85). Instant voided warranty. Never use more than E10, and only if you have to (ethanol lowers gas mileage beacuse of it's lower energy density compared to oil and it takes 1.26 gallons of gas to create 1 gallon of ethanol from corn in the US).
The same would happen if you hooked up a Prius or a Civic Hybrid and tried to tow with it. The CVT's are computer controlled and anything that falls outside normal operating specs -towing- would record and probably set off your check engine light.
Rent a truck for the day or give a few bucks to a buddy with a truck and have him do it.
Your Prius may get the boat to the water and may even be able to launch the boat, but I doubt if you will be able to get the boat out of the water with it.
Buy a truck. Even if you tried to tow the boat and made it to the ramp all the other guys at the boat ramp would make fun of you. a prius will not tow the boat.

If Iran Puts Those British Sailors on Trial. . . .Will There Be War ?
After reading all the articles about what happened, it's clear that even if their 'raft'(boston whaler I think) strayed a few feet into Iranian waters, they weren't armed enough to start any trouble, let alone go looking for it . They only had side-arms . But on a waterway that is basically divided down the middle. . .one half Iraqi waters, the other half Iranian. . . .it would be easy to stray off course . AND all other sources are saying that they didn't stray, and they were in Iraqi waters !!
The penalty for espionage is Death. . . .. If Iran prosecutes them, will there be a war ?If Iran Puts Those British Sailors on Trial. . . .Will There Be War ?
Earnest ... I guess you may have already found an article regarding the border clash with U.S., Iraqi, and Iranian forces. If not, see my U.S. News %26amp; World Report link below. The Iranians seem to be itching for a fight.
My feelings: Unless the diplomatic discussions are making great headway, it seems Iran may indeed put the captured 15 on trial. Similar inappropriate treatment of prisoners was reluctantly endured during Operation Desert Storm when Iraq captured and "displayed" a handful of U.S. servicemembers (see 2nd link below). That conflict was already in progress when those servicemembers were captured, so it's a bit different than the situation with the 15 from the U.K.
This situation with the U.K. captives is another matter, of course. There are so many possible scenarios, I prefer to not venture a guess as to what might happen.
One thing is certain, though: If Iran keeps "messing around," it can only strengthen the case against them. The only friend (for lack of a better word) they'll make by throwing their weight around in this way is North Korea, perhaps. If Ahmadinejad pushes too hard, he's going to regret it.
I don't think that one incident will start a war, but it is one of many.
Did you know that an Iranian infantry platoon recently fired on a US/Iraq patrol--IN IRAQ!
I think war is inevitable unless Iran changes course immediately. If Iran Puts Those British Sailors on Trial. . . .Will There Be War ?
Iran has the right to try British nationals within their jurisdiction but the law must conform to internationally accepted principles of justice.
I hope the Brit's show some backbone and kick some Iranian ***If Iran Puts Those British Sailors on Trial. . . .Will There Be War ?
The only people saying that those fine men confessed to being in Iranian waters is the Iranian government. It's clear at this point that Iran is trying to piss someone off. They waited until the Brits had finished searching the vessel in question and were on the way back to their frigate. That's not spur of the moment.
The answer is yes and no.
The world have been facing war since this last 10 years, and the world doesnt want to have another war. Wars are being prevented at the moment.
If the Iran Government prosecute the 15 soldiers yes their will be a war but they wont prosecute them. They will detain the soldiers for a miximum of 15 days and after tht they will be free as form of goodwill.
Mistakes happen afterall we are all humans. The Iranian Government have to capture the soldiers as they were on their teritory, any country will do the same thing but some countries are more flexible compared to others.
At the moment war with Iran is a NO NO. We are already facing a war in progress with Iraq.

Iran has been pushing the west's buttons for decades. They take great pleasure in taking nations to the brink of war, as they did when they held our embassy workers hostage for 444 days during the Carter administration. I don't think this will preclude a war because the UN is scheduled to vote on further UN sanctions against Iran for their nuclear power program. They will not want to further inflame passions against them because current sanctions in place are definitely hurting their domestic economy. They don't want to look like a rogue state (even though they are). I think this problem will be remedied within a week.
It may come to nothing but we all think that Iran is pushing it. It could be over in a week.
What is the point of bombing Iran it would damge them, but the allied troops cannot afford a Iraq 2 next to Iraq
I personally think it is unlikely. The Iranians I think are looking to barter them for the Revolutionary Guards and an Iranian General captured in Iran or just to make the west look stupid and weak for a little while and then magnanimously let them go.
Highly unlikely, but if they did put them on trial and executed them, first, there would be heavy sanctions levied against them. They would then complain that the Brits were the aggressors and were found guilty through a fair trial and in accordance with their laws were executed. They would also increase their activity in Lebanon and in Iraq as well as sponsor terrorist acts on Western interests around the world. I don't think that will happen, but it will be a possibility which I hope does not pan out.
They were on the wrong side of the street, and this wont go anywhere. Iran will use the soldiers to barter with.
What....no music today?
Anyway..to answer your question....according to all those involved....the Brits were in Iraqi waters (Iraqi fisherman, HMS Cornwall commander and the Commander of the US Fifth Fleet). BUT...the Iranians do not accept the way the waterway was split.
This is just more political posturing by a country that is truly just seeking attention (think child having a temper tantrum in the store).
The British are too civilized to start a war over this when they realize WHO they are dealing with.
My gut tells me that the Iranian government is doing this as a show of strength. They want to be a force to be reckoned with. They are obviously delusional but I don't think that they are stupid enough to poke Britain with to much force. They must know that their first name isn't GREAT for a good reason.
Amaddinnerjacket wants some bargaining room for his nuclear aspirations. He has that now with the Brits Sailors, he needs them alive and well for his negotiations to work.
There will be a show trial. there will be intense back-door negotiations and they will be released (eventually).
But first we'll have to watch the news feeds from al Jazeera showing bug-eyed, unshaven, crazed zealots dancing in the streets proclaiming "death to the great Satan's".
You'll want to puke, but then it'll be over. This is a political ploy for Ahmadinejad to strengthen his standing at home and divert attention from the unanimous UN sanctions vote that just occurred.
Unfortunately, it will work.
War will be prevented.

Recommend a small multi-purpose boat?
Looking for a small boat (around 13ft) for getting around (short trips) and for some water skiing (two skiis, not slalom). Was looking at a 13ft Boston Whaler with a 40-50hp engine. Boat will be used in a bay in the ocean.
What do you recommend?Recommend a small multi-purpose boat?
Without knowing anything else about you, I recommend going to a boat show, most cities have 'em, see what's available. 13 footer is smaller than it sounds, and 40-50 is less power than you might think. Take a look at some 15 to 17 footers, maybe 70 to 90 HP -- but note this general rule of thumb: anything less than 75% of the max rated horsepower is going to feel underpowered.
But all that aside, Boston Whaler makes a great boat, don't let anybody tell you different.

15 ft jet boat wont trim?
i have a boston whaler rage with the 175 mercruiser engine in it and even if i put the tab all the way down the boat still beats up and down. is there a way to fix that?15 ft jet boat wont trim?
The reason it has a built in trim in the last 20" on the bottom. It's mandatory of all boats 16' and under so no mater how much power it will not trim up for speed it will porpoise up and down. To fix it the back half of the hull bottom has to be fiberglassed flat. Then it will trim up and run smooth. But will be hard to steer.Trim tabs might help in your case.15 ft jet boat wont trim?
get a hydrofoil for it.carolina skiff

What kind of boat should i be looking at?
I am 16 years old and am sittin on about 3 and a half grand and am going to buy one once i get ab 15 grand and am looking for a small 20 -24 ft bayboat i can fish for snapper and redfish w and maybe if weather permitting some tuna....ive been looking at some boston whalers but i dont really know what else is out there any suggestions preferably under 20 grand hahaWhat kind of boat should i be looking at?
I would buy something like an old 17" Mako, 17' Aquasport or a 15'-16"-17" Whaler for a first boat or for easy towing. The engine should be a re-powered late model and properly cared for. For an 18'-20' boat look at same brands plus Sea Craft, Robalo or Wellcraft center consoles. Make Sure 15+ year old boats have solid transom cores. These are name brand boats that can be bought right and should hold their value.
by all means have someone that know boats look at what you are looking to buy, boats can be a LARGE HOLE IN THE WATER that you throw MONEY. check the deck, wiring, transom and motor to be in good shape. What kind of boat should i be looking at?
The BW's are great boats but pricey compared to some others that are just as good. Take your time and look around at the marinas and boat shows to find a boat that's all you want.
HIRE A SURVEYOR BEFORE DOING ANYTHING. 2 times I have gotton boats and the transom was rotted. I recommend a sea ray to anyone that asks they are amazingly well built. What kind of boat should i be looking at?
If I was 16 years old (again) and had $3,500 and looking for a 24' boat for some Coastal fishing - I would go to Glen-L.com and pick out a real nice set of boat plans, and build my own boat.
Not only can you save yourself a ton of money, you can also (if you follow the instructions and do it right) end up with a much better and stronger boat then you can possibly buy at twice the price. You will also learn more about boats and boating while you are building your boat, then most boaters will ever know in their life time.
One cool thing to remember here, is that you can start building now, and since it is a "time consuming" project - it works out well... You buy some materials (as much as you can afford) and start building... by the time you get as far as you can and need more materials - you have more money... so, you buy what you need for the next phase, and build some more This way - by the time you have made your money anyway - you will be finished with your boat - as, building it yourself saved you a bundle.
Check it out... I have furnished a link to Glen-L. There you will find some great information on boat building, how to do it, different ways, materials and methods. It is a great site, and much to learn - even if you don't buy a cotton-picken thing from them. If you like boats, it is worth the visit.
In addition, they have plans for boats, just like the ones you mentioned, that you can build yourself. So check it out. Boat building is not rocket science - you can do it - and these people are great, they will help you long after the sale is made.
And by the way... I built my first boat using a set of their plans when I was 16. I am now 62 and currently live full-time on a 40' boat I built from their plans. I am also building another 44' using their plans. You can do it, and these people are great people to help you get started.

Cost of Boat Painting?
Around how much would it cost to have a 17' Boston Whaler hull professionally touched up (several minor repairs) and painted using good paint?
What would the price difference be to have it re-gel coated.Cost of Boat Painting?
If you are going to have it painted the cost should be around 2,000 not including the bottom of the boat. Make sure you use a good quality paint, like sunfire from sherwin-williams (this is what I would personally use) or Imron it is a good quality paint but doesn't hold out on the gloss as well as sunfire. If you go with gelcoat. This is the best way to go if you have somebody do it that is experienced. That should cost around 3,000 not including the very bottom of the boat and may be a little extra depending on how bad the damage is you mentioned.
.Cost of Boat Painting?
Not sure on the price of Gel coat but I Painted my boat with a Polyurethane (Imron) about 5 years ago and its holding up great. I am a painter (automotive) by trade and My guestimate without seeing the boat %26amp; repairs you mentioned is approx $1800-2500.

I have a Suzuki DT 15hp...throttling is fine at halfway mark(slow)..from halfway mark to full throttle it?
flutters. can only get it to go 5 ot 10 mph. Do you know the reason for this? ..S.D. CA....its on a boston whaler.I have a Suzuki DT 15hp...throttling is fine at halfway mark(slow)..from halfway mark to full throttle it?
Might have a fuel or carby issue. If you get the service manual it will describe any fail-safe situation and likely action, as different makers use different techniques to protect the engine from overheat or low oil.
Failing that drain the tank and make sure it is clean. Re-fill will clean fuel, make sure the tank vent is open, make sure the plugs each end of the fuel line, the primer bulb and the fuel line itself is in good order. Substitute if not confident. drain carby and remove bowl to check no rubbish in carby. Replace in-line filter if fitted, clean and check fuel pump as per manual. At this time you could also tear down and clean the carby and replace any worn items like needle and seat. Gaskets in less than good condition should be replaced. Check float level per manual. Reassemble and check all connections and timings per the manual. Prime engine as instructed in the service manual and test.
When you have fully eliminated the fuel system you must start with the electrical system. Do not forget the cooling system. All these issues are covered in the service manual, there is no way of efficiently covering all the procedures without one, unless you like wasting time and money in a series of random actions that might fluke the repair - or might not.
Good luck.

Ar you a good sales person?
I told him "Dude, your weekend's shot, you should go fishing."

Boat wont run without choke?
I have a Mercury 2 stroke on a boston whaler. The motor has been converted from oil inj. to mixed with gas. The motor will start when the throttle is pulled up and the choke on the key is rpessed, it dies unless you continue to push the button over and over. the carbs were rebuilt 4 months ago, and im really not sure where to begin looking for a problem. it runs smoothly and sounds fine as long as i continue to press the choke button in. any ideas would be appreciated.Boat wont run without choke?
You need a new fuel pump diagphram. Been there many times and thats what it turns out to be. The choke richens up the mixture and it runs ok when you are not getting enough fuel from the pump.
that symptom really only has one cause.
your hi-speed jet(s) are clogged.
The choke floods the engine with gasoline. It's necessary for a cold start, but any other situation in which the engine doesn't shut off when choked, means the fuel mixture is too lean to catch fire (not enough fuel vapor mixed with the air in the combustion chamber).
If the fuel pump were inoperative, the carb bowls would run dry; the choke would not be able to supply enough gasoline to make the engine run when choked.
Sometime in the last four months, the engine has either picked up some kind of debris that passed through the filter but caught in the carb, or else it sat unused and the evaporating gasoline gummed it up.
solution:
Remove carb(s), disassemble, soak overnight in carb cleaner, blow out all passages with compressed air (or aerosol carb cleaner), reassemble with new carb kit(s), reinstall, link %26amp; sync, adjust mixture screw(s) (if equipped).
And STOP running it like that -- your engine gets it's lubricating oil from the gasoline, so which ever cylinder(s)' starved for fuel is also not getting any lubrication. It's being dragged through a dry hole -- not good.Boat wont run without choke?
Here is a big "if"-- if it ran fine after you converted to mix, and this is a "new", not an "ongoing" problem. Then all the deep thinking about jets and oil injection are mote. In short, something went wrong in the carb, or reeds or seals.
First do a compression test to be sure you have something to work with.
The first thing to try might be the "hail Mary" vacuum clean of the jets and passages. To do this you will need access to the intake.
Run the motor up to 2000 rpm and slap your hand over the intake while it is running. Hold it there till the motor dies. The restart might take some time ,and you may want to do the procedure more than once. If there is some stuff in there this will probably move it around. If you do notice a difference, then you need to do the carb again and find out why stuff is getting past the filters.
If that had no effect, you will need to find out if the problem is common to one cyl or all.
Using your fingers as a choke to keep the motor running- slowly spread your fingers to lean the mixture. One or both (how many?) cylinders will drop out. If one drops but the other wants to keep running, you may have seals on the crank shaft failing. If it pops back thru the carb and scares the heck out of you, then you have shattered reed tips.
Either problem will require some one who is familiar with mercs.
There could be several things actually. With the oil inj. gone, the mix ratio that was variable with engine RPM is now gone. Play around a bit with your ratio to get it right or adjust your carb jets to choke the air down enough to run. Having a motors' system taken away plays havoc for a while. But keep in mind that you do not go too lean with the mix and that the underlying problem may be the motor itself may be going south on you. Do a full check on compression and your ignition systems, like checking for the burn pattern of your plugs, may give you a hint of where the problem may be. Good Luck.Boat wont run without choke?
I would say you have a carb problem, if it is leaning it out when you shut off the air it runs, check for the throttle plates opening, and that it is getting fuel at low idle
you could try bumping up the idle speed a little bit, or raising the octane of the fuel before you mix it with oil
obvious fuel blockage ..check feeds and inlet too carbs....
I have come across something like this with an old suzuki. The issue is that at idle the oil injection is at a ratio of at least 200:1, possibly even much less as the engine only needs the extra oil at high revs/load. With dykes type rings and full roller bearing systems a modern two stroke needs very little oil at low load to avoid wear. Were the carbies tuned for pre mix fuel at rebuild? I would expect the primary jets are too small to give enough petrol at low revs. You do not say if the engine can be coaxed up to high revs and then how it runs. The additional oil in the mix means that there is less petrol in a given drop of pre-mix - and this oil content is now four times what the engine had with the original system, so creates a lean burn situation, the additional oil also slows the flame front so the original timing may now be out enough to create an issue. When converted did the oil injection system get fully examined and all potential air leaks get blocked off correctly? Sorry to go on but the symptoms are of a very lean condition, The manifold seals between the carbies and the engine must be checked to ensure there are no leaks of any sort.
Good luck.:)
Doh! Thanx Mark. The fuel pump diaphragm is an excellent suggestion. I have just got a little 6 Evinrude going that had a pump fault - fixed by swapping out the pump for one off an old dead engine. All fuel lines and the tank pick up required attention It had the same symptoms.......... It was late when I typed the first part.

Which boat should I buy?
I've narrowed down my choices to a 1980 Boston Whaler Revenge 20, a 1989 WellCraft 210 Coastal, 1976 23' SeaCraft Spectre or a 1980 Tiara Pursuit 22. All are outboards of roughly the same age.Which boat should I buy?
Tiara.
Boston Whaler
SeaCraft
Coastal
In that order. I have a Pursuit, great boat. I have worked on and operated Whalers for years, another great boat. The SeaCraft is a very good boat but has more age related problems (stringers) and the WellCraft is the least quality of the bunch but still a decent boat.
1st off, if any of those are fiberglass, forget about them.
fiberglass alone isnt strong enough. wood is used in fiberglass hulls and wood is vunerable to moisture. just take a look at a 30 year old wood fence or wood porch, it will be falling apart.
20-30 years is a FULL life for a fiberglass hull.
once you have elimated the fiberglass hulls, whichever alum hull best fits your intended use should be taken to a qualified marine mechanic for a mechanical inspection.
a mechanical inspection is similiar to going to your doctor for a physical. a quick once over to make sure its not gonna drop dead the day after you buy it.
after that, actually get it out on the water and DRIVE IT.
there are things that are diffucult if not impossible for even thebest mechanic to notice on land that are OBVIOUS when in the water.
ultimately, even with the newest, your still talking a 20+ year old motor. so, dont expect any of them to be perfect. you dont want to buy a new outboard just yet, or you would be looking at newer boats.
but you will be looking at a new outboard in the next 10 years or so on any of them.....
with a good alum hull, you can repower it again and again and still have a good alum hull.
repowering it will raise its value by very nearly every penny you spend on the new outboard. and will likely make it nicer then any new boat you could buy for what it will be worth then.
my boat for example, 1984 hull that was only worth a little over a grand a year ago is worth over $8k today with its 2011 mercury 60 hp outboard it now has. there are similiar boats to it with comparable new prices, i can literally run circles around them. less hp then mine has, less features, less room/seating.....
find a NICE old alum hull and get it CHEAP. fix it up, repower it, and its better then anything you can buy for the same money and will last just as long.Which boat should I buy?
I would opt for the Whaler. They are terrific boats and the resale value is outstanding. Don't listen to Cliff about fiberglass boats. There are literally thousands of 30 and 40 year old fiberglass boats still giving good service. And some boats contain no wood at all and others have encapsulated it so well that rot isn't a factor. The make of the motor isn't much of a factor as long as it is Mercury, Evinrude or Johnson. But the condition of the boat and motor are a big deal. Be sure and get both inspected, especially on older boats like these. Good luck, have fun.
As for the boats that's your choice
For the outboards, be very careful as parts for those older units are getting hard to find. Especially if it's a Chrysler ( Force ). I suggest you do the research on the outboard engines themselves and go from there. Or ponder the thought of replacing it with something modern. All outboards of that age should be 2 cycle ( stroke ) where you have to mix oil/gas. Keep this in mind as wellWhich boat should I buy?
none unless you have plenty of money to spare. and none listed. engine too old and worn. if used in salt water worse.

I saw what I believe to be a 13'4" Boston Whaler Standard boat in good condition with a fairly new 15 HP Johnson outboard engine on it for sale. The owners wanted $2900 for it and were also including a trailer for the boat (which I do not have). A friend of mine said that if the boat has been there for a few days and hasn't sold yet, then it is probably overpriced. I'm wondering, do you think this is a good deal or is it more than the boat is worth? Is it a good deal?
YEAR ???? WE NEED THE YEAR ???? The boat trader web sites don't give the right price for the boat, it's worth a little bit more because, a "Boston Whaler" is a desirable boat, therefore it commands a price a bit higher than www.nada.com
look at boat trader on line and check out what people are selling them for....
If a boats been their a few days ,,,,, it doesnt mean anything... a few mionths may be...Is it a good deal?
If it's a 2007 model, it's a good deal. If it's a 1987 model, not such a good deal.
The 13' Boston is a great little boat, and if in good condition, worth the asking price. I've seen them with wheel steering and 40 horse motors. They have to be hell for stout to take that kind of power. The 15 Johnson is adequate-not ideal. One thing for sure, the Boston will hold it's value if you take care of it.Is it a good deal?
Year? If its newer than 2000 than its a bargain.

My dad is wanting to buy a boat!?
we r looking for one close to ocala fl. we would like a key west or boston whaler from free to 5,000$. any info would help! thanks! My dad is wanting to buy a boat!?
Would have to agree with Woody. Used boats can be found in the $5000 price range that may need a little attention or could be ready to go.
You should check the local fishing goods stores, the local marinas and try and find a local boat shopper magazine. Check out the classified ads in your local papers.
If you can not find what you want then look on line, E-Bay, Craig's List, Boat Shopper and more.
Then you find one - you need to check it out to know what you are getting. Ask for a test ride, check out the steering, controls, electronics, navigation lights, etc. The motor should start easy, you may even want to have a mechanic check it out. If this is your first boat take some one with you that knows about boats to help check it out. Make sure all the safety equipment is in workable condition and current. anchor, PFDs, fire extinguisher, safety flares...
Take a boaters safety course for your safety and others.
Good Luck - Boat Safe!
I'm not sure why people have been so negative. You CAN find boats for that sort of price.
A Boston Whaler or a Key West might be a little ambitious though. Have a look on ebay. They have a huge boating section and it's your best chance to pick up a bargain. It's better to go with something small and manageable in good nick than to be tempted to buy a bigger boat that's going to require a lot of work. And try to see the engine running- either by video or in person- before parting with your hard-earned cash.
It's worth the effort though. Boating is the best thing in the world. And an older boat can be really rewarding.
Best of luck in your search. My dad is wanting to buy a boat!?
it depends on what type of fishing you plan to do?also will it be moored or will you trailer it?a fiberglass boat will give a better ride than an aluminium boat but will cost more in fuel(both in the water and trailering it),also it will be harder to get back on the trailer due to it's weight! also i think an aluminium boat is a lot easier to maintain.but i do agree with above answer in that, you get what you pay for(cheap is normally nasty).....hope it works out for you and......"tight lines"
Of course, they are all alike.. right.. so you wouldn't both telling us some of the DETAILS like HOW BIG and WHAT KIND OF CONDITION or POWER or SAIL... etc... you know... THOSE LITTLE UNIMPORTANT THINGS.
You are NOT going to get a boat that is worth the effort to fix up for FREE to $5000... You can either spend $15,000 on a boat that is ready to use, or you can buy one ofr $5000 and spend another $20,000 getting it ready to sail.. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A FREE LUNCH when it comes to boats. My dad is wanting to buy a boat!?
Yes, its possible to get a used boat for that price.
Here are some listings for you

you will never find a boat that cheap. Boats are veryy expensive and gas is usually outrageous. Usually 5 dollars. Boats also come with a big responsibility.
Check Craigslist.org and boats.com maybe some local marinas. I'm sure you can find a nice little Boston Whaler around $5,000.
You can pick your town and price on this site. Good Luck!

Ski pylon fitting question?
I have an '90 17ft boston whaler and i want to add a ski pylon to keep the tow rope above the engine. Problem is i dont wanna spend the money on one and it not fit correctly, so that being said anyone have any ideas or perhaps have fit a ski pylon on a boston whaler? i know its not a ski boat! but its all i have so dont be mean. Any ideas would help! thanks!Ski pylon fitting question?
I purchesed a ski pole called INSANITY PYLONS! This pole requires no hard mounting to your boat and can be installed and removed with in 5 minutes. It is also designed to fit any boat and is fairly priced when you consider no mounting fees! check it out
for Australian sales go to

i do agree mate. i checked out the insanity pylons website and browsed their faq page and found that they also have a modular wakeboard tower that doesn't require any drilling. right after i sent an email to them, they said it's designed for use on fishing boats with center consoles like many boston whalers. the way it apparently works is that it uses an "arch" (like a U turned upside down) with two straps going to the front of the boat and two straps going to the stern of the boat. the two straps in the front go around the center console, so you dont have to worry about the strap going over your windscreen. the ski rope just connects at the top of the arch. go to their web site and send them an instant message from their contact page and ask them to send you a picture of their tower, or wake board pylons. the thing i really liked about their site is that they had a video to show you how it works and and a couple videos of it in use. its worth a shot.Ski pylon fitting question?
I have had the same dilemma as you but with a different boat! The best thing is to check in with your local marina/marine store. They may have done a similar installation, so they can give you tips. Also, check your area for boat shows. They are a great place to meet boat owners %26amp; skiers who can help you out. Local water-ski groups in your area might be able to help out too.
i'm pretty sure those are sold by transom configuration. look and see which one matches the transom of your boat.jdm

1979 Johnson 70hp 3cyl. Excellent cond. hood is removed! maintenance and upgrade tips please!!!!!?
I'm 15 and I LoVe my Boston Whaler. It's a 1975 15ft. Whaler Sport. My father let me use his alumnacraft last year. He gave it to my uncle for his house up north, leaving me without a boat. All my neighbors and practically everyone in our yacht club have whalers. Ironically, our neighbors were selling theirs so my dad bought it for me! I love engines n high performance. Alot of people on our lake have smaller whalers, mostly 13 footers with 25-50 hp motors on them. not mine! I got 70! The kid's like to race eachother and stuff. People always made fun of my crappy tin boat. But im more respected with my whaler. I recently installed a whale tail stabilizer fin. Now its really fast. tops out at 48mph. So far I have the fastest whaler. I've never lost a race with it yet.
In a few weeks, I'm going to take it out and restore it.
- redo the wood finish
- add seat cushions
- repaint the motor.
- new/larger "whaler" decals
- 4blade speed prop
- what about engine upgrades??1979 Johnson 70hp 3cyl. Excellent cond. hood is removed! maintenance and upgrade tips please!!!!!?
Thats a great old engine, I would strongly advise against trying to modify it, marine engine rebuilds are pretty expensive and boat motors are already built to high performance standards anyway.
It can be done but it would be cheaper to buy a bigger engine if you want to go faster.1979 Johnson 70hp 3cyl. Excellent cond. hood is removed! maintenance and upgrade tips please!!!!!?
Tere isnt much restriction on a stock boat motor but it could help a bit at high speeds.
Make sure water cant go straight into the carbs if you are running in rain.
It is gonna be noisier, I suspect there will be a pronounced waahhhhh as you open the throttle up.
dont worry, i never drive it in the rain.
but as I go faster, more clean air from the outside will be pushed into the carbs as the carbs suck the air in, instead of the carbs sucking in air contained under the hood.
Since air flow to the cylinders is greatly increased, I'd need to increase the fuel flow as well, right? If so, how can I do that?

1979 Johnson 70hp 3cyl. Excellent cond. hood is removed! maintenance and upgrade tips please!!!!!?dont worry, i never drive it in the rain.
but as I go faster, more clean air from the outside will be pushed into the carbs as the carbs suck the air in, instead of the carbs sucking in air contained under the hood.

Since air flow to the cylinders is greatly increased, I'd need to increase the fuel flow as well, right? If so, how can I do that?

2 to 4 person sailboat?
I grew up sailing on a great little Boston Whaler sailboat and little on a Laser II. Can anyone tell me if there is a nice sailboat like these that is being made these days? Thanks.2 to 4 person sailboat?
A 2 person sailboat would be in the 16 foot and over range and a 4 person sailboat would be at LEAST in the 20 foot and over category. There are a lot of USED sailboats in that size range. Look in www.boattrader.com2 to 4 person sailboat?
there are still many small sailboats manufactured today, but the cost of building them is very high because of the high cost of fiberglass and epoxy. (petrochemicals),
my suggestion is to check out the popular sailing classes in your area as well as look at the bargains in the use sailboat market. there are many great small sailboats available like the 420, 470, lido 14, oday rebel, day sailor, rhodes 19, mariner, thistle, lightning, flying scott, snipe, catalina 15, etc.
you may want to look at smaller racer/cruisers in the 19 to 23' range with swing keels that are trailerable like the san juan 21,23, catalina 22, oday 20, 23. smaller hunters, spindrift 22. etc. they can handle a crew of 2 to 4 and have limited sleeping/cooking facilities plus able to carry a porta pot.
another option is to build your own sailboat.
hope this helps2 to 4 person sailboat?
Walker Bay makes a little dinghy that you can add their sail kit too to make a small sail boat.

Are there any other boat classifications other than R/V and F/V?
Is there something for cruise ships? Personal watercraft from Boston whalers to yachts? Are there any other boat classifications other than R/V and F/V?

Hello!
There are many prefixes used for both merchant and military ships.
M/V= Motor Vessel
S/S= Steam Ship
F/V= Fishing Vessel
S/V= Sailing Vessel
R/V= Research Vessel
Those are some of the more common ones for civilian/merchant vessels. There are many more. Check out the link below for more info! Are there any other boat classifications other than R/V and F/V? Like maybe M/V, Military Vessel?
M/V is actually Motor Vessel, not Military.
Most ship's names include the type of ship, like SS for Steam Ship, M/V (as noted above), etc. Cruise ships tend to use just their names, and may leave out if they are motor (oil/diesel) or steam-powered.
I am not 100% sure how personal vessels (i.e yachts) are listed.

Are carolina skiffs unsinkable type boats?
i hear carolina skiffs are unsinable type like a boston whaler. does any one know for sure ?Are carolina skiffs unsinkable type boats?
Absolutely true!! And, for a lot less money. They're flat-bottomed, so they don't ride as good, but they're great for shallow waters.
Thank you.....and I hope you enjoy your new boat.
well, any 16 foot and under required by uscg to be basically unsinkable. yes to your question, they float because of foam usually about a couple of feet under the water surface but the are very wet rides. they push water forward and usually end up spraying back on you. i have had more than 4 friends who purchased them and end up selling them shortly after. i have been on them and fished from them inshore and offshore. sorry, i hate them. good luck. keep a raincoat with you at all times. maybe it will help you float too. just kidding
It's an inexpensive flat bottomed work boat, that has lot's of room, and can support a lot of weight, as far as being constructed with closed cell foam floatation throughout the hull like a "Boston Whaler" is ? I doubt it heavily, I have owned both boats, I no longer have the "SCARE-O-LINER SKIFF", comparing a "Carolina Skiff" to a "BOSTON WHALER" is probably a good sales pitch from the saleman at "Carolina Skiff's", many boats compare themselves to a "Boston Whaler", THEIR IS ONLY 1 "BOSTON WHALER", everything else is just a "WANNA BE", when you overload them and fill the hull with water is what seperates the "men" from the "boy's", the "Whaler" will still float high in the water with the engine above the water AND STILL RUNNING, as where the other boats just "Flounder" and dump everyone over the sides, don't take my word for it, watch the video !Are carolina skiffs unsinkable type boats?
thouht the only boat unsinkable was titanic and we know what happen there
The best answer is knowknot , they suck badly.

- add seat cus1979 Johnson 70hp 3cyl. Excellent cond. hood is removed! maintenance and upgrade tips please!!!!!?
That's cool. Understand that every boat has what's called a maximum hull speed. When that speed is exceeded, the boat will chine walk, and if not slowed down it will roll over. The fact that you get 48 mph out of it is awesome! Install a tach and make sure you are topping out between 5400 and 5600 RPM. Make sure you keep up on your gear oil, water pump, spark plugs, and fuel filters. Have fun.1979 Johnson 70hp 3cyl. Excellent cond. hood is removed! maintenance and upgrade tips please!!!!!?
if you're going to race it, you need Boysen reeds. go .002" over on the main jets and replace the fuel pump. then you can prop down an inch and rev to 5800. could be a real sleeper.1979 Johnson 70hp 3cyl. Excellent cond. hood is removed! maintenance and upgrade tips please!!!!!?
I have a 70hp Johnson on my bass boat. I bought it 3 years ago not knowing a whole lot about boats or motors. I found this site on the internet and joined the forum. I have learned a great deal there. I only go back in when I need some bit of infromation. They also have an online parts warehouse which I have used a bunch. They also email me sales, and specials.
I hope to see you in the forum, good luck!

Depth, speed, and temperature fish finder?
I have a 2003 13' Boston Whaler that I use in the river for stipers. Sometimes I troll, or use chunk bait. I am looking for a cheap fishfinder that will show me the depth, speed, and temperature. What is the cheapest fish finder that displays all of these things. I have found ones for $70.00 but they don't offer speed which I really want.Depth, speed, and temperature fish finder?
High speed sensor would be an option to many models. Nowadays the fishfinders come with depth and temp (and maybe lower speed sensor).
Try Humminbird. I have bought more than 4 of them and they are quite reliable but, of course, not as good as some $300 models made by others.
It could be a bit tough to buy something nice for $70, but you don't want to settle for some crappy ones.Depth, speed, and temperature fish finder?
Check Lowrance on line. You should be able to get one for about $300.00.
