Can I go over the recomended horse power on my boat?

I have a 160 Dauntless Boston Whaler and would like to put a 125hp motor on it.Can I go over the recomended horse power on my boat?
4 biggest problems with over powering a boat:

1. if inspected properly by authorities, its not legal.

2. weight. if its heavy enough it can cause the boat to sink on its own.

3. the extra force may literally allow the motor to rip the back off the boat clean off.

4. the weight and power difference may be enough to cause the rear of theboat to drop under water on even moderate accelration.

if weight is not very different, it is possible to go slightly overpower, but then you need to be very careful about how fast you give it gas......

unless the rating is at least 100 hp, i wouldnt go to 125.Can I go over the recomended horse power on my boat?
are you asking for permission? you don't have it, but you don't need it.

the rating plate is just the manufacturers recommendation.

But note that some jurisdictions have adopted laws prohibiting excess horsepower (my state is *NOT* one of those), so if you're going to boat in such a locality, note that you are subject to serious fines.

Also note that you should advise your insurance agent that you're over the rated HP. If you don't, and have an accident, they can and will use this as an excuse not to pay, unless you've already disclosed it.

Finally, if you plan on fishing any bass tournaments, note that the pro bass tour and many local club tourneys require compliance with the rating plate.

Otherwise, it's up to you.Can I go over the recomended horse power on my boat?
the boston whaler dauntless 160 is rated for 115hp (including 4stroke motor). which gives the boat a top speed of about 44mph.

depending on where you plan on boating, it may or may not be illegal to overpower your boat. but your best bet is to keep at or under the max recommended hp rating. it may be possible to achieve better performance by changing to a SS prop.
