I just bought a 2009 Boston Whaler 15 super sport. After I went through my first ten gallons of gas the battery died because the Voltage regulator was dead. Now, not even a month later it has happened again. What could be causing this? The boat is not driven hard at all or anything like that, I just don't understand.Voltage Regulator on 60hp Mercury Outboard?
O.k. - you replaced the regulator? But nothing else?
Not near enough info. If you have a manual battery switch it may be faulty or operated while the engine is running. Your rectifier may be faulty - that will just keep popping your regulator, however if the regulator is faulty it normally allows too high a voltage through.
Get a service manual, Crowley is a good source of exploded diagrams.
It might be as simple as bad connections to the battery - start with the terminals - clean posts and terminals and reassemble and tighten with a spanner - coat with terminal sealant to prevent any water or corrosion. Make sure the internal connections to the charging system are clean and with good contact - starter motor and all.
It is a process of elimination. If you don't use the procedure out of the service manual you are just hoping to stumble on the cause, and you can replace a lot of stuff perhaps never fixing the root problem, just spending money.
Have your battery checked by a quality service centre - there is no place for standard car starting batteries on a boat, they don't handle the loads.
